At ECR 2010 in Vienna we will hold 4 days of OsiriX Hands-on workshops. There will be 16 1-hour hands-on workshops with 12 Apple Macintosh 27" iMacs regarding basic and advanced topics. The attendance for the workshops is free and registration is through the European Society of Radiology.

Between the workshops internatinal users will present their best-practice use with OsiriX to the European OsiriX Community.

Ist der iMac 27" mit i7 Quad-core Prozessor als DICOM PACS Workstation schnell?

Heute wurde der iMac 27" mit i7 Prozessor geliefert. Schon beim Starten von OsiriX PRO fällt auf, dass das Starten der Anwendung sehr schnell geht. Beim Laden von großen Datensätzen folgt die erste Überraschung: Eine CT DICOM Serie mit 1121 Bildern (512er Matrix, 16bit) wird in 6 Sekunden in den Arbeitsspeicher geladen. Wir hatten bisher beim MacPRO immer knapp 10 Sekunden gemessen.

Ein 3D Volumerendering dieses Datensatzes zeigt die Leistungsfähigkeit des Prozessors deutlich: In höchster Qualitätsstufe läßt sich das Volumen im Vollbild (4 MP) ruckelfrei und ohne "Verpixelung" rotieren. Dafür musste vorher eine VolumePro Karte von Terarecon verwendet werden, die soviel kostet wie sieben gut ausgestattete iMacs.

Fazit: Der iMac 27" mit i7 Prozessor ist die ultimative DICOM PACS Workstation und schont den Geldbeutel.

Update: Neuer iMac 27" mit Magic Mouse als DICOM PACS Workstation

Wie bereits im Oktober 2009 hier berichtet ist der neue iMac 27" mit Magic Mouse eine interessante Alternative als PACS Workstation.

Nachdem Apple die Liefer- und Verpackungsprobleme, die in verschiedenen Blogs berichtet wurden, gelöst hat, stand einem ausführlichen Test der Hardware nichts im Wege.

Das brillante 27" Display mit LED-Hintergrundbeleuchtung besteht die Abnahmeprüfung gemäß DIN 6868-57 in Kategorie A und in Kategorie B. There is a new OsiriX plugin available, called BullsEye.

The BullsEye plugin shows a BullsEye vectorial image. This image can be manually edited, and saved as PDF or DICOM file.

It is available as a download via the OsiriX plugins manager.

CT 2010 Garmisch-Partenkirchen: OsiriX PRO Workshop

Vom 27.-30. Januar 2010 findet das 6. Internationale Symposium Mehrschicht-CT in Garmisch-Partenkirchen unter der Leitung von Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Maximilian F. Reiser, München und Prof. Dr. Gary Glazer, Stanford, USA statt.

Nach den großen Erfolgen der Workshops in 2009 freuen wir uns am 29. Januar 2010 den ersten deutschsprachigen OsiriX PRO Workshop in Garmisch-Partenkirchen beim CT 2010 Symposium zu organisieren.

aycan donates again to support the goals and the vision of the OsiriX Foundation. With this support we want to honor the work of Prof. Ratib, Dr. Rosset and Dr. Heuberger.

aycan was the first company who believed in the success of OsiriX since 2005. Since then we donated money and source code for the outstanding OsiriX project. We organized several OsiriX user meetings at RSNA and ECR.

aycan is offering OsiriX PRO as an FDA-cleared and CE-labeled version of OsiriX as medical device class II with support and comprehensive documentation. We are also organizing OsiriX hands-on workshops. In 2009 we held 14 workshops and we are planning the same amount in 2010. The first OsiriX workshop will be held at CT 2010 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

The creation of OsiriX Foundation followed several years of unprecedented research and development of an Open Source solution for medical imaging.

OsiriX project started in 2004 in California, USA.

Das 95. Jahrestreffen der Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) findet auch in diesem Jahr wieder in Chicago statt und steht unter dem Motto "Quality Counts". Das Treffen ist weltweit das Wichtigste und Größte seiner Art. Vom 29. November bis zum 04. Dezember werden ca. 50.000 Teilnehmer in der Windy City erwartet. Neben den zahlreichen wissenschaftlichen Präsentationen und Fortbildungen wird die angegliederte Industrieausstellung das Interesse der Besucher auf sich ziehen. In drei Hallen präsentieren die Aussteller ihre Produkte und Lösungen.

Der Stand von aycan (Standnummer 8903) befindet sich im North Building, Hall B. OsiriX PRO Workshop für Postprocessing und PACS Integration begeistert die Teilnehmer

Am 23.10.2009 bildeten sich 13 Ärzte der Fachrichtungen Radiologie, Chirurgie und Zahnheilkunde in der Verarbeitung medizinischer DICOM Daten fort. Im Executive Briefing Center der Fa. Apple in München wurden die Grundlagen moderner Bildverarbeitung auf modernen Apple Computern geübt.  Drei erfahrene Trainer zeigten den Teilnehmern in einem ganztägigen Hands-on Workshop mit OsiriX PRO den aktuellen Stand des medizinischen Postprocessings und Themen rund um die PACS Integration.

Im gewohnt stylischen Ambiente des Schauraums des Unternehmens aus Cupertino konnten die Ärzte die aktuellen Produkte von Apple bestaunen. Darunter auch den in dieser Woche neu vorgestellten iMac (21,5", 27"), Mac mini (Server), Macbook und die Magic Mouse.

OsiriX PRO ist die als Medizinprodukt Klasse II CE-gelabelte Version des beliebten Freeware DICOM Viewers OsiriX.

Heute hatte ich Gelegenheit bei Apple in München, den diese Woche vorgestellten iMac 27" und die neue Magic Mouse zu testen.

Der iMac arbeitet mit einem Intel Quad Core Prozessor und kann mit bis 16 GB RAM ausgestattet werden. Das 27" Display ist brillant. Wir werden bei aycan das Display in Kürze einer Abnahmeprüfung nach DIN 6868-57 für medizinische Bildwiedergabegeräte nach Kategorie B unterziehen. Bei bestandener Abnahmeprüfung ist der neue 27" iMac mit OsiriX PRO - der CE/FDA gelabelten Version des beliebten OsiriX Viewers - eine DICOM PACS Workstation mit hervorragendem Preis/Leistungsverhältnis. Und sie sieht auch noch verdammt gut aus.

Die Magic Mouse hat ein geniales Design, liegt gut in der Hand und läßt sich kinderleicht bedienen.

Gefäßchirurgie 2009 - Multimodale Gefäßmedizin

Unter dem Motto "Multimodale Gefäßmedizin" fand der 25. Jahreskongreß der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Gefäßchirurgie im Münchner Gasteig statt.

Die Nachfrage der Gefäßchirurgen nach einer einfach bedienbaren und leistungsfähigen Lösung zum Ausmessen der Aortenmorphometrie war erstaunlich groß. Viele Fachbesucher interessierten sich an unserem Messestand für die Vorteile von OsiriX PRO.

Zusammen mit Dr. Rolf Weidenhagen (Oberarzt Chirurgische Klinik und Poliklinik, Klinikum der Universität München - Klinikum Großhadern) und der DGG veranstaltete aycan beim Kongreß einen Workshop für das Ausmessen von Aortenstentgrafts mit OsiriX PRO. Der Hands-On Teil des Workshops an aktuellen Apple Rechnern war das Highlight. Die Workshopteilnehmer waren von der Leistungsfähigkeit der Apple Rechner in Verbindung mit OsiriX PRO begeistert.

Mit 2,5 Stunden war die Zeit für den Workshop mit Hands-On Teil einigermaßen knapp bemessen. Deshalb bietet aycan am 20.11.2009 in Würzburg einen Ganztagesworkshop zum gleichen Thema an.

Reaktionen auf der MedConf 2009 zum Thema Open Source Software als Medizinprodukt

Heute hatte ich einen Vortrag auf der MedConf 2009 in München. Die MedConf ist eine Konferenz, die sich auf das Thema Software- und Systementwurf für Medical Devices konzentriert.

Am Beispiel OsiriX PRO habe ich exemplarisch unsere Arbeit bei der Zertifizierung von OsiriX  und die Widerstände, die wir zu überwinden hatten, berichtet.

Anfangs waren nur 7 Leute im Vortrag, aber 2 Minuten nach Beginn füllte sich der Saal, so daß am Ende ca. 50 Zuhörer da waren. Die anschließende Diskussion zeigte, daß das Thema durchaus am Puls der Zeit ist.

Bei den Delegierten - hauptsächlich Softwareentwickler und QM-Leute - herrschte Erstaunen über die Tatsache, daß viele Ärzte OsiriX ohne CE-Label und Dokumentation einsetzen. In anschließenden Gesprächen mit Teilnehmern hörte ich Kommentare wie: "Das dürfen die Ärzte doch nicht, sie verstoßen gegen geltendes Gesetz." oder "Warum tun Ärzte so etwas?". Dieses Unverständnis ist nachvollziehbar, da sich die Teilnehmer der Konferenz einen großen Teil ihrer Arbeitszeit mit dem Medizinproduktegesetz beschäftigen und es als klare Rechtsvorschrift anerkennen.

Die Gründe für den klinischen Einsatz von OsiriX ohne CE-Label sind sicherlich vielfältig. Ein Hauptgrund dürfte die freie Verfügbarkeit sein. Dafür nehmen die Benutzer dann (un)wissentlich ein höheres Risiko bei der Verwendung der Software mit Patientendaten in Kauf.

aycan together with JOTEC conducts OsiriX PRO workshop for vascular surgeons

aycan together with JOTEC (manufacturer for medical devices for aortic and peripheral vascular disease) conducted an OsiriX PRO hands-on workshop for vascular surgeons. 

Besides  the  basics of conducting preoperative planning,  the course included anatomic and morphologic orientation and the measurement of the aorta.  For the choice of an appropriate stent graft, it is very important to have exact length and diameter measurement. Through its positive feedback and success aycan is planning more of these sessions in Europe and the US.

Das KIS als Medizinprodukt

Schon seit längerem fordert Prof. Christian Johner, daß klinische Informationssysteme als Medizinprodukte einzustufen sind. Laut einer Pressemitteilung hat nun GE bereits Anfang 2008 als erster Hersteller sein Centricity KIS für die Anästhesie und Intensivmedizin als Medizinprodukt gelabelt.

In Prof. Johners Blog berichtet er nun von einem Treffen mit einem hochrangigen Siemens Manager, bei dem er dieses Thema diskutiert. In einem früheren Blogbeitrag berichtete Prof. Johner von dem massiven Echo seines Kommentars zum gleichen Thema in der CIO.

Die Einstufung als Medizinprodukt ist sowohl für die Hersteller und die Betreiber eine Herausforderung und bedeutet zusätzlichen Aufwand. Es wird sicherlich spannend sein, die weitere Entwicklung zu verfolgen. Vor allem im Hinblick auf die ganzen RIS- und Patientenverwaltungs-Hersteller. Werden diese Systeme auch als Medizinprodukte klassifiziert?

RSNA 2009 in the middle of the financial crisis and H1N1 flu

At RSNA 2008 we faced a 5% decline of attendees (total 58,795) at all. Industry exhibitors declined 12% (24,683) with 4% less exhibition space. At RSNA 2008 the RSNA opened Lakeside center as additional industry exhibition space (used to be InfoRAD area), which caused more walking distance for the attendees.

As we are now in the middle of the global economic downturn, it will be more likely, that we see another decrease of these numbers at the RSNA 2009 scientific sessions and technical exhibits at McCormick Place in Chicago Nov. 29 to Dec. 4.

The H1N1 flu will probably aggravate the decrease of the number of attendees. 

With no major health organization advising delay, the Radiological Society of North America is moving forward with its 2009 meeting, despite evidence suggesting the week-long event will be held in the midst of an H1N1 flu epidemic.

The RSNA website published some Tips for Staying Healthy:

1. Get vaccinated. Get your seasonal flu vaccine and the H1N1 flu vaccine when it is available. In clinical trials, most adults who got a single dose of H1N1 vaccine were protected within 8 to 10 days. Make sure you get a good night’s sleep the day before you are vaccinated. Sleep can boost the effectiveness of immunizations.
2. Wash your hands frequently. Use soap and water for 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
3. Avoid touching your nose, mouth and eyes.
4. Cover your coughs and sneezes. Use a tissue, or cough and sneeze into your upper sleeve.
5. Stay hydrated. During the winter months, we have a tendency to lose fluids when our heated homes and dry air rob us of moisture.
6. Stay home if you are sick. Symptoms of influenza include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.

aycan und JOTEC veranstalten OsiriX PRO Hands-On Workshop für Gefäßchrurgen

Im September 2009 veranstaltete aycan zusammen mit der JOTEC GmbH einen Hands-On Workshop für Gefäßchirurgen. Am Firmenstandort in Hechingen wurden 10 Gefäßchirurgen und drei JOTEC Mitarbeiter im Umgang mit OsiriX PRO unterwiesen. Der Kurs umfasste die präoperative Planung, die  anatomische und morphologische Orientierung und die Vermessung der Aorta. Für die Auswahl eines geeigneten Stentgrafts ist die korrekte Durchmesserbestimmung und Längenmessung äußerst wichtig.

Die Mehrzeilen-Computertomographie ist heute ein international akzeptierter Standard in der präoperativen Planung von Aortenstentgrafts in der Gefäßchirurgie und hat die Angiographie in vielen Fällen abgelöst.

Das positive Feedback der Teilnehmer bestätigte den praktischen Nutzen für die tägliche Arbeit der Gefäßchirurgen.

Open Source Software war das Hauptthema des ersten Euro PACS Academy Kurses

"Linking research to clinical practice" war der Slogan des ersten EuroPACS Academy Kurses. Der Kurs fand in Pisa, Italien vom 25. - 26. September 2009 statt.

Das Hauptthema war der Einsatz von Open Source Software in der Medizin. Prof. Paolo Marcheschi und Prof. Osman Ratib erläuterten in ihren Vorträgen Open Source Initiativen im Bereich Medical Imaging. Weitere Themen waren CAD und klinische Bildverarbeitung. aycan nahm erfolgreich beim Workstation Face-off mit OsiriX teil.

Der 2-Tageskurs wurde von Ärztenm Wissenschaftlern und Entscheidern aus dem Bereich Medizin besucht, die mit Planung, Einkauf, Implementierung und dem Entwurf von PACS Infrastrukturen befaßt sind. Bei dem Kurs wurden die grundlegenden Konzepte und Expertenempfehlungen für den Systementwurf dargelegt, sowie ein besseres Verständnis für die Grundlagen medizinischer Informatik gezeigt.

Open Source was the main topic at the 1st EuroPACS academy course

Linking research to clinical practice" was the slogan of the 1st EuroPACS Academy Course. The course was held in Pisa, Italy on 25. - 26. September 2009.

The major topic was Open Source Software in medical imaging. Prof. Paolo Marcheschi and Prof. Osman Ratib were doing lectures about Open Source initiatives in medicine. Other topics have been CAD and image processing. aycan participated at the workstation face-off with OsiriX, which was presented by Prof. Ratib himself.

The two-day course was attended by physicians, scientists and healthcare professionals who are involved in planning, purchasing, implementation and design of imaging infrastructures for image management and communication. It provided the basic concepts and expert recommendations for system design and implementation and better understanding of the fundamentals of imaging informatics. It also provided information and image processing and computer assisted diagnosis tools with hands-on workshop on advanced image processing workstations.

Due to the economic crisis the total attendance was behind the expectations. Organisators and vendors agreed to make the next course more attractive with more hands-on and a shift to more clinical topics.

OsiriX PRO erfolgreich beim Multislice-CT Hands-on Workshop an der MHH präsentiert

Am 12. und 13. September 2009 fand in der medizinischen Hochschule Hannover unter der Leitung von Prof. Dr. Galanski der 16. Multislice-CT Hands-on Workshop statt. Dieser Workshop bietet exzellente Fachvorträge zu technischen und medizinischen Aspekten der Multslice-Computertomographie. Es findet aber auch jedes Jahr ein Workstation Contest statt.

Mit der Präsentation von Postprocessing Workstations verschiedener Hersteller (Siemens, GE, Philips, Vital Images, TeraRecon, Carestream, Rendoscopy, aycan) haben die Teilnehmer die Möglichkeit eines direkten Vergleichs. Im Vorfeld liefert die MHH den Herstellern 8 MDCT Studien, an denen beim Workshop in 45 minütigen Sitzungen die Postprocessingfähigkeiten gezeigt werden.

aycan stellte sich mit OsiriX PRO zum vierten Mal der Herausforderung. Diesmal boten wir mit 12 Laptops (MacBook PRO, mit freundlicher Unterstützung der Apple GmbH) als einziger Hersteller den Teilnehmern eine echte Hands-On Situation.

In der Abschlußdiskussion wurde die Leistung von aycan und OsiriX PRO von den Teilnehmern und Organisatoren als sehr positiv bewertet.

Neben dem Postprocessing ist OsiriX PRO auch noch problemlos als Befundungsstation und als Import/Export-Arbeitsplatz (Drucken, DICOM-CDs importieren/exportieren, Daten korrigieren) geeignet. OsiriX PRO verfügt über die notwendigen DICOM Schnittstellen um sich nahtlos in ein RIS bzw. PACS zu integrieren. Weiterhin ist OsiriX PRO eine der schnellsten medizinischen Workstations, die momentan verfügbar sind.
